Park to ensure that we not only live in a beautiful but
also a safe place," said a resident who had no alarm until
this program.
FIRE FACTS
- According to 2002 NFPA statistics,
74% of all structure fires occur in residential properties
- 55% in one- and two-family dwellings.
- 4 out of 5 fire-related
deaths occur in home fires - 69% in fires involving one-
and two-family dwellings.
- In 47% of Florida’s 2002
reported residential, structure fires, smoke alarms were
present, yet 17% of them were not operational. 30% of
the structures involved in reported residential fires
in Florida (2002) did not have smoke alarms.
- A living room fire can threaten
an entire house in a few minutes - producing life-threatening
conditions in upstairs bedrooms less than two minutes
after the smoke alarm sounds.
SMOKE ALARM PROGRAM 2004
The Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department would like to take
this opportunity to remind Winter Park residents that...
- Smoke alarms save lives
Inexpensive home smoke alarms can wake you in time to
escape - cutting your chances of dying in a home fire
nearly in half.
- How many do I need?
At least one smoke alarm should be installed on every
floor of your home. A smoke alarm should be installed
outside sleeping areas and in sleeping rooms. On floors
without bedrooms, install alarms in living areas.
- Where do I install alarms?
Mount alarms high on a wall or on the ceiling. Position
wall-mounted alarms with the top of the alarm 4-12 inches
from the ceiling. Position ceiling-mounted alarms at least
4 inches away from the nearest wall.
- Where should I not install
alarms?
It is not recommended to install alarms in kitchens, bathrooms,
or garages where cooking fumes or exhaust might set off
false alarms or in attics or other unheated spaces.
- What maintenance is required?
Test your smoke alarm on a monthly basis. Smoke alarm
batteries should be replaced two times a year... remember
“Change your clock, Change your battery.” Replace smoke
detectors that are over 10 years old. In addition, clean
your smoke alarm with a vacuum cleaner without removing
the alarm’s cover. (SOURCE: National Fire Protection Association
