Renovations are Completed to Fire Station 62 on South Lakemont Avenue . . .

After several construction delays, firefighters are again responding from new quarters on South Lakemont Avenue.

Originally built in 1969, Fire Station 62 has been serving the east-side community for more than 30 years. When Public Safety Bond Referendum was passed by the voters in 2000, plans were put into full swing on upgrading this facility.

Demolition began on the old structure in late May 2001. While construction was expected to be completed in late November 2001 it was actually completed for service in April 2002.

Funding for the renovation was approved in April 2000 with the passage of the Public Safety Facilities Improvement Bond. The budget for this project was initially $480,000. With all the totals in, the final costs related to the renovations will be close to $650,000. The increases from the original amount were a result of finding items that needed to be replaced after the initial construction began.

A very special thanks goes to our City Parks and Public Works Departments for assisting with the final grading, concrete work and landscaping. Much of their work was not included in the cost of this project.

The new facility includes a completely new dormitory facility for the firefighters which include individual sleeping quarters and study rooms. Additionally, the station has a new alarm alerting system which when fully operational will allow for the individual alerting of units. A small fitness room is also part of the renovations.

Engine 62 and Rescue 62 are housed at this facility which is staffed with five department personnel. When originally designed, the department staffed this station with only two firefighters. Service demands have increased in this coverage area to a point where Station 62 is now one of the City's busiest.
