GearThe Fire Rescue Department conducts a comprehensive selection process for the position of firefighter. All applicants are required to complete all steps of the process before being placed on our eligibility list. The written Civil Service Exam is open to all candidates. However, an applicant must have certification / possession of the following items in order to be considered for placement on the eligible list:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • State of Florida driver's license
  • State of Florida's Firefighter Minimum Standards
  • State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic

Applicants who successfully pass the written Civil Service exam with a score of 70% or greater may be selected to participate in the remaining portions of the selection process. Other steps in the selection process include:

  • Firefighter Skills Testing through the Central Florida Emergency Services Institute
  • Personal Background Investigation
  • Civil Service Board Interview
  • Polygraph examination
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Fire Rescue Staff interview
  • Medical Physical / Drug screening

All Civil Service eligibility lists are valid for a period of six months from the time of the final certification.

Experience Pays:

The City of Winter Park acknowledges the benefits of hiring personnel who have gained qualified experience in the profession of fire and emergency medical services. It is with that in mind that the City has initiated a program that serves to further compensate those qualified firefighters for the years of experience gained from being employed outside the City of Winter Park Fire Department.

Selected Candidates who can demonstrate the qualified experience listed below will receive a one-time, two-step pay plan adjustment. New employees who can demonstrate the same will start the current pay plan at Step 3.

The following criteria are required to receive this benefit.

1. A full two-years (24 months) of consecutive employment as a firefighter with a fire service agency. You must have been a full-time (paid) employee of the agency.

2. A notarized letter from the current head of the agency from which you are requesting consideration qualifying your tenure with that organization. The letter shall also include a list of all positions held within the organization and your starting and ending dates of employment.

Automatic Disqualifiers:

Any applicant found to have one or more of the following Automatic Disqualifiers in their background will no longer be considered for processing and will be dropped from any further consideration.

Criminal Record

  • Conviction of any felony
  • Conviction of any offense involving moral turpitude including any larceny concealment, bad checks, embezzlement or perjure.

Driving Record

  • Driving License under current suspension
  • Driver's license suspension within the past 12 months due to a moving violation.
  • DUI or Wreckless Driving Conviction within the past three years.
  • Conviction of misdemeanor hit and run
  • Extensive traffic convictions (e.g. three within the past 24 months)

Drug Usage

  • Any use of opiates or any illegal hallucinogen.
  • Any substantiated illegal act, including the possession, sale, manufacture, or distribution of any narcotic controlled substance or dangerous drug as defined by state or federal law.
  • Any use, possession or purchase of marijuana within 12 months before submitting an application or anytime thereafter.
  • Any illegal use of a drug or substance within 24 months before submitting an application or any time thereafter.

Firefighter / EMT

$35,987.37 - $55,401.09

With Two Years Qualified Experience

$38,924.41 - $55,401.09

Firefighter / Paramedic

$40,726.65 - $62,696.82

With Two Years Qualified Experience

$44,049.82 - $62,696.82
